Gibbon Spotting Cambodia is an initiative of ‘See Cambodia Differently’ and ‘DutchCo Trekking Cambodia’ in partnership with ‘Conservation International’ and local communities.

Cl has been working in the Veun Sai-Siem Pang Conservation Area located in Ratanakiri and Stung Treng provinces alongside the FA since July 2009, with aim of achieving long-term protection of the area.

In 2010 a new species of gibbon, the ‘northern yellow-cheeked gibbon’ were discovered and since then their project has focused on site based conservation utilizing enforcement, community engagement and scientific research.  As well as assessing the viability and feasibility of establishing Community-Based Ecotourism (CBET) focused on viewing a group of habituated gibbons at the site, in collaboration with villagers and established committees.

After a successful habituating period with the gibbons a partnership was formed in early 2011 to create a unique opportunity for environmentally-conscious wildlife enthusiasts to experience these incredible animals living freely in their natural habitat and so the three day two night gibbon spotting trek was formed.

Treks to the area started in early 2012 and have achieved a great deal of success in terms of gibbon spotting and integrating all the partnerships involved.  And we look forward to welcoming you to Cambodia, the province of Rattanakiri, the Veun Sai-Siem Pang Conservation Area and the gibbon research centre.

Conservation International

has undertaken the preliminary background research for ecotourism feasibility and viability as well as the training of local communities living around the area and the establishment of CBET management committees in villages.www.conservation.org
